Breathe (2019)
Plastic Straws
Breathe (2019) is a text-based sculpture made from tens of thousands of plastic drinking straws donated to her to save them from landfill. Gala uses these found objects to remind both herself and the audience to breathe, something we always must do but when living with anxiety, it often goes forgotten. When witnessing the enormity of the task of gluing these straws, there is a sense of a mindful performance and trance that she would have undergone during the construction process, concreting the idea that we must all breathe to get through this.
